After the 3rd of August 2015, the Islamic State controlled a region of Iraq, including the Nineveh plains, that consist of many different ethnic, religious, and cultural groups.
The Islamic State targeted the Yazidi communities, mainly women and girls, destroying most of their historical and religious landmarks, capturing more three thousand women and young girls ages 8 to 30 years old, enslaving and raping them.
The Yazidi community felt loneliness and isolation with no one protecting them in the Iraq and Kurdistan regions, leaving thousand to flee their country.
Emma Organization and Women Peace Group in coordination with Hivos Organization organized a conference within the Lalish Temple (the holy worship place of Yazidi people) to develop a road map for sustainable development in the Shingal and Nineveh plains.
