25 April 2016

To continue efforts in creating sustainable peace and coexistence in the Shingal (Sinjar) and Nineveh Plains regions, various groups of Kurdish women jointly held the Second Lalish Conference for Peace and Coexistence in the Lalish Temple in Shekhan on 25 of April 2016.

The conference was organized by Women Leaders for Peace Group and Emma Organization for Humanitarian Development with support from Hivos a Dutch Non-Governmental Organization.

The second conference focused on the mechanisms of returning peaceful coexistence to the Shingal (Sinjar) and Nineveh Plains, after the Yezidi communities faced genocide by ISIS after their entry to the region in 08/03/2014, destroying the social community in addition to the infrastructure.

Several international experts in peace building and representatives of minorities of the target area along with women activists participated in the discussions.

During a panel session, speakers shared their experiences in peace-building efforts in their respective countries and their participation in difficult conversations and negotiations with adversaries. Was it possible to overcome differences?  What were the steps that were taken to overcome these differences?  Have these communities moved on? How have the different groups maintained the peace? Is it sustainable for the future?  How do the different communities feel justice was applied?  What were the major challenges they have faced? These were amongst the many questions discussed during this conference in efforts to understand and build capacities amongst communities throughout the Kurdistan region.
