Emma Organization for human development announced “Rising One Billion” campaign. Rising One Billion is a campaign being launched in Germany to raise one billion voices to eliminate violence against women in the world. Emma Organization as first Kurdish Organization participated this campaign.
As we continue to Rise to end violence against women– it is imperative now for us to expand our understanding of women’s oppression and exploitation in the context of capitalism, colonization, racism, imperialism, environmental plunder and war. We have been compartmentalized and divided for too long. Our Rising must now connect our specific oppression to the common universal humanity that binds us all. This is no less than a way of life, a way of seeing, a way of being in the world. It is not one day that we rise, but every day that this consciousness must rise in all we do.
The campaign targets women to be braver and go deeper, they call every women to use their voices to end the violence against women in all forms.
We as Emma Organization held the campaign in camps and Erbil city at college of art and literature under feministy slogans to speak out women rights in Kurdish society. The slogans are the reflection of women issues in society such as sexual and physical violence in its more overt and obvious forms: rape, battery, incest, sexual harassment, female genital mutilation, sexual slavery and trafficking, child marriage.
The campaign is dated on Valentine day, which is a popular and big problem women targeted under the name of love. As it is clear, Valentine day is marked as love day, that day lovers exchange their feelings, with giving red roses cards, and celebrating a special day. But, unfortunately, this day is exploited, filled with trivial activities, loses its meaning, became commercial rather than being a day with true feelings. Some people manipulate their partners for sake of their self-interests.
Muhamad a young college student said “people should know what time to deserve for love, now we are students at university, it is very early to think about love, while our age requires learning, discovering the real love”.
The discussions were very calm, the students from both genders, exchanged their opinions, most of them agreed that nowadays, people should be more aware to find a right person. Some of them thought that Media should be under some criteria to reflect true love.
“ A free women, can raise a free educate child, a free child can build a productive country”, Hazhar a student explained.
Also Emma Organization Duhok team, organized some awareness sessions to a number of girls form Dawdiya camp. They gave a seminar to protect themselves from exploiting, and how to value true love. In other hand, another team went to Shariya camp, they spread slogans to deliver their messages how not to be quiet in a relation which is under violence.
